Sleeves
Sleeves is an ambient folk band from Boston in the USA. Back in 2010 Callum Plews formed the band and with the additions of Kim R. Schulke, Justice R. Hill, and Tabitha Wertheim the band came in to fruition.
I took a listen an immediately was absorbed by a sound that was completely different to the space I had expected. Sleeves has taken the concept of folk and wrapped it up in dreamy spires which loom above the clouds. The experimental nature of the orchestration doesn’t leave the listener wallowing around in frustration, rather draws them in to the cloudy atmospherics.
There is a multitude of activity going on in the compositions and it is due to the strength of the song-writing that it emerges on the right side of the fence. The intriguing combinations and structures play to a gentle rolling tempo, drawing up a bean-bag on which to lay-back and drift with the out-put.
Instruments combine in a wash of sound which takes the mind on a relaxing journey of discovery. Kudos to Sleeves for adding a new space to folk.
