Eternal Summers
Eternal Summers is an indie band from Roanoke in the USA, which I learnt at school, oh – 35 years ago – , is an Independent City in only one of 4 Commonwealths as opposed to States. When there are 50 states in the USA, the answer is no – there are 46 States, 4 Commonwealths and 1 Federal District, (Let’s not go to Independent Cities on this article – but there are 42 in the USA and 39 of them sit in the self same Commonwealth). Aside from that - Nicole Yun and Daniel Cundiff who started out as a duo added the bassist Jonathan Woods and life evolved for the dreamy pop band. It seems appropriate to create yet another new genre we can all reflect on… grassgaze hits the nail on the head for me.
I am going to run with the grassgaze concept as although there is a similar sound the shoegaze, we don’t hear ‘reflections’, we hear ‘absorbed’, so it makes sense to me. Eternal Summers strum hard on the strings yet don’t permit the power to shine through the speakers as they employ dampers to sublime effect and the instrumentation is ripped back to a cheap acoustic, which lies so comfortably with my ears as I think of bands such as The Vibrators, yet the chords are far more sophisticated and the ears are lifted to higher skies.
There is pleasure to be taken wandering through the out-put which smacks of so much of Madchester yet has a delightful freshness and the listener is not left in a deluge of dark emotion, rather a lifted space.
