The Plain Steel

The Plain Steel is an indie rock band from Hamilton in Canada. Having been around since the end of the last Century originally as a studio project for the guitarist, they have been through several iterations before finding the right groove and line-up in early 2011. There is an intriguing line-up of instruments which the band put to good use. Ross Lizotte (guitar, vocals), Caroline Olsen (viola, vocals), Jay Lees (bass, vocals), Vince Waters (drums) and Geoff Ball (cello).

There is a a broad mix of everything in the sound that the band unleashes in to the room. Rock a billy, folk, Country, rock and more. The instruments add a superb depth to the sound and the members of the band play really well together, with an empathy that raises the level of music to an even higher bar. Strings are pushed to their edges and deliver soul searching renditions, whilst guitars and drums drive the sound forward with the energy of a rock band.

I find myself ever more intrigued by the bands that are pulling in what are thought of as more classical instruments and pushing the envelope with the instruments, whilst wrapping them into high octane rock constructs. This is far more challenging than finding the tweaks on a computer, it requires a more orchestral composition, as each instrument needs to fit in to the overall sound.

The Plain Steel may have been slow out of the starting blocks, though to be fair there is a considerable catalogue, with a new album Folk’n'Roll in the starting gate.
