The Damn Jammage – Well Hanged EP

There I was minding my own business and suddenly Damn Jammage came in to view with a new release – Well Hanged. We chatted on Facebook and I had time, but in all honesty the safest way to ensure I get material is to send me an email, I get so easily distracted.

Anyway… Damn Jammage, love the name it is so enticing to mistype, are: Danny Rapscallion (Vocals), Jasmine Cave (Piano & Vocals), Paul White (Guitar), Paulo Paulo (Bass),  Lewis Jones (drums) and Lottie Bowater (Accordion/Organs/Xylophone/Percussion), a London based outfit who have been around since 2010.

Damn Jammage | Well Hanged

Well Hanged, is a 4 track EP  comprising acerbic lyric accompanying melodic construct.

No Rest For the Crooked gets us off to a superb start. Rock-a-billy foot stomping and a baritone vocal make for a meld of pure blue suede brothel creeper. Instruments appear from the speakers with no introduction and whisk the listener off – to Jive with ever more attitude.

Following in short order we have Black & Blue, which finds the band in a far more emotive space. A scintillating duet eases the track forward and it can’t be only me who has a vision of the man in black and a virgin white bride holding hands beneath a high sun, heading to disaster. Scene changes are discordant, adding to the sense of unease that the ears knows is imminent. The score adds nothing but scintillating back-drop to a an ingenious composition.

Stockpiling Poison is resonant of Ennio Morricone, wrapped up in a Chriss Isaac, Blue Velvet construct. The instrumentation adds swathes to an engaging piece of work. Again Damn Jammage, don’t let the listener relax for too long before demanding a toe to tap with the music. The six musicians are able to work well, creating sufficient energy to demand engagement without becoming enveloped in a smog of noise.

Finishing with (Show me) Lonely Lost Love is a joy. The up-beat sounds dancing out of the amp are in complete contrast with the lyric, which describes anger and sadness.

I am delighted I was sent off rail today to take a listen to Damn Jammage and I would recommend taking this opportunity to get hold of the Well Hanged as soon as it comes out.
