Letters – EP review – Older Motion Pictures

The Scottish indie outfit Letters were featured in February, coinciding with their March release of the single The Halfway House. However their four track debut EP Older Motion Pictures was released in May, meaning another review is over-due!

Letters – Older Motion Pictures EP

The opener Explosions showcases catchy riff after catchy riff, leaving all the focus of the guitar with never entering the song. The song flows well, and you are never conscious of the fact there is no vocal melody.

Older Motion Pictures is the next track. The song is dark and moody, with well written and heartfelt lyrics. The Scottish twang in the lead vocal sounds brilliant. The vocals are noticeably strong, and coupled with the solid song structure; it makes for a very strong track!

The third track Torren starts off a lot slower, but builds to a much more upbeat chorus. Here the cello really comes into its own, giving the track both a warm feel and a solid base simultaneously. It also sounds like there is violin, again suiting the song to perfection. I’m not 100% sure if I’ve got this right, but it sounds to me like there is the lyric ‘you bastard dogs’ in the middle of the song; if this is the case it’s one of the best lyrics I’ve heard!

From Time To Time is the closer of the EP, and has a real Snow Patrol feel to it. This is probably an obvious comparison with the Scottish sound to the vocals, however in this song the similarities are more apparent that earlier tracks. The song, and EP, ends on a high with an epic outro to the song; always a good idea and Letters execute it well.
