Bottle Cap Rockets – First Seven – EP review

It has been just over a year since the indie bands blog first took a look the Bottle Cap Rockets and the band has a new EP First Seven set for release later in June 2012 which was Produced and Engineered by Pete Surdoval known for his work with major recording artists Cat Stevens and Jimmy Cliff. Not to forget a new Drummer Yuergen Renner and Bassist Chris Wolfer.

Black El dorado opens the release and there is no doubt we are in Rock ‘n’ Roll territory, when done well this is a space which the body can’t help but feel comfortable, no matter which genre of music you find yourself drawn to. A bit like Bach, even three chord philistines like myself can’t help but become intoxicated. Well, the great news is that Bottle Cap Rockets play this superbly with some sweet key changes enticing the ears.

It’s OK reminds me of a 21st Century blend of the Kinks as the pulsating straightforward drum and guitar constructs ring out like an anthem, forcefully demanding it is time to dance.

Following with the more complicated Hold Out, which finds the band wandering to a vocal driven track, whilst instrumentations shimmer with shoegaze. This track introduce a more emotional contextualization to the band which they deliver superbly and creates a new dimension to a tight out-fit.

Opening the second half of First Seven finds my pick of the release, well it would be wouldn’t it – The rock-a-billy tipped –  Can’t Stop The Bleeding.

Alluring as Laurel may be, my ears are still ringing with the previous track that it took me a moment to find my footing before discovering  Bottle Cap Rock Rockets  resonating in an indie-pop number. Another new arrow that the band can fire with first class grades.

Means To An End find the band in a more mellow space as the vocal is given room to explore yet more territory. The EP is an avenue for the band to showcase the core talent as well as the wider repertoire.

Concluding with Look What You’ve Done, which is a snappy title for a closing track, takes the group back to the ground they own. Solid blues based rock ‘n’ Roll.

First Seven is a delightful traverse across the ground that is Bottle Cap Rockets. Well worth taking the time to get to see if they are playing near you any-time soon.
