The Gadsdens

The Gadsdens from East London in the UK, formed when Jody Gadsden (Vocals) and Simon Neilson (Piano) met at a party in Hackney, they teamed up with David Roman (Drums),  Barney JC (Guitar) and Jihea Oh (Bass) striking virtually immediate success.

Their catchy music is driven along by a combination of fast bass and drum. The distinctive voice of Jody is superbly complemented by the piano, the two working together and creating the sound that is The Gadsens. Throughout their faster pieces the band retain great control, but this does not compromise the complexity and emotive output as the music dances to its natural conclusion. As regular readers of the indie bands blog well know, I am normally more in tune with strong bass lines, but it is on the slower piano led tracks by The Gadsens that their technical and intuitive musicianship is truly displayed. They are a band who will appeal to a broad musical taste, with the faster catchy tunes and a real musical skill to draw on to raise them far above the synthetic indie pop crowd. A band which can take the sound of Bronski Beat and slows it down to a piano led, emotionally charged release deserves credit for that alone.

The Sailor Song, the track used by Greenpeace, WaterAid and Oxfam’s joint charity awareness video on The Pyramid Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival has brought the band a well deserved higher visibility and this will be released as a single on 29th November 2009. I will bring you more information nearer the time.

There version of Halo (Beyonce) is an excellent example of how well they handle slower emotive pieces. It’s lovely. I didn’t like the original. Check it out on Youtube.
