The Late Twos

The Late Twos is Matty Legge (Vocals), Ross Bickerstaff (Drums), David McMaster (Guitar / Vocals), Ryan Bennett (Lead Guitar) and Ryan Costley (Bass) an indie pop band  formed in 2011 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

An easy sound in which to become involved, The Late Twos have an underlying sense of rage as the drums relentlessly hammer out a rapid tempo and for this and the guitar styles I am somehow reminded of Stiff Little Fingers, though the material is far lighter in feel and the frustrations somewhat different in context. Once again I have over the past six months or so found Northern Ireland is becoming a centre for serious statement music and although lighter in texture, equally as powerful as the bands I had tremendous respect for in the late ’70s early ’80s and it is thanks to the likes of this quintet that the musical spotlight may once again turn to a location which has over the years had much to add to the musical landscape.

Whilst lyrically the songs speak of blockages, the music has a smart beat that can’t help but get the audience start to move with the sound. I haven’t had the opportunity to hear much of their music, as there isn’t much recorded material to hear, but with set of London gigs scheduled for late March 2013 in support of their debut three track EP I hope this can be rectified.

The two guitars are employed by The Late Twos to add not volume, but texture and the melodies they therefore are able to undercut to the powerful beats add significant depth to the sounds, whilst not deflecting from the sense of passion with which the band reflect on the world around them.
