The Varsity
The Varsity is an indie pop band from Cambridge in England. In March 2012 Connor Morris (vocals), Nigel (Vocals), Oscar Corney (Guitar), Matt Barkway (Bass) and Sean Clayton (Drums) got together with the aim to raise a smile and a dance…
… Success I would say….
Well that would make for a brief review.
Having made a sharp start, including the release of a debut five track Get Down, Get Loud! EP the musicians work well together and the two vocalists enable to band to switch easily between modes. I look forward to hearing more. Stretching across a range of musical styles, I fear that the audience will become distracted and possibly confused, which is a shame as these are a group with some wonderfully intricate work inside the compositions. I find The Varsity particularly strong when they utilise the darker edges to their sound which give the ensemble an opportunity to demonstrate not only their abilities, but to deliver sounds which course through the veins as much as the dancing feet of the listener.
Just a few miles down the road from me, I have little excuse to not find out the gig schedule of The Varsity and get out to see them in live performance to satisfy my curiosity over the breadth of musical styles, as to be fair, I have only heard their EP, which as a debut does exactly what it should to showcase the abilities and thought processes behind the band.
Get Down, Get Loud! EP – The Varsity is available on iTunes*.
