Hartley

Hartley is the the roots blues and folk-rock father and son duo of Jay and Colin Hartley, from Cheltenham in England.

Both started to play at an early age, given a (great) grand father who played piano in silent films at the turn of the last century it is perhaps in the blood. The extensive catalogue built up over the years by Colin has been enhanced by the addition of Jay a couple of years ago, Colin now finds himself as a full-time musician, not sure what that says, but after a varied life there will hopefully be more time for emphasis on original material.

The music has the essential grit of the genre and is both played and sung with an effective emotion that doesn’t ring out as affected. The duo deliver a sound which wraps the listener in a blanket of rough wool and I was drawn to images around a cold-night bonfire, when the music is what makes it all bearable.

The material is emotionally demanding and it is a credit to Hartley that those sentiments emerge from the speakers. Well known on the smaller festival circuit, this is an out-fit it will be interesting to hear develop.
