Ben’s Brother

Starting out in 2005, the band name, Ben’s Brother is a telling perception of how Jamie Hartman felt about his relationship with his older brother, Ben.

Kris Houston (Keyboard and Guitar), Luke Potashnik (guitar), Malcolm Moore (bass) and Karl Brazil (drums) along with Jamie Hartman (Vocals, guitar, keyboard and even the harmonica) make for the current line-up of the band.

Perhaps an atypical sound for the indie bands blog, Ben’s Brother, from London, are well worth a listen. Combining strong lyrics with an acoustic sound and Jamie does have the distinction of being able to sing.

Having been with EMI and securing an Ivor Novello nomination, the band found themselves looking for a new record company in 2008. They did exactly what I like in bands. They did it for themselves, forming Flat Cap records and going on to produce and release their album Battling Giants and single, Apologise.

The personalisation of the band by Jamie, with the band name; and the record label being a play on his trademark appearance, could lead some to expect cloying self-indulgence. This is far from the case. The very nature of the music, lyrics and voice, make for something which can resonate closely with many listeners.

Good luck to Ben’s Brother, the Band and the person. I hope the demons are beginning to shift from Jamie’s mind and he can perhaps feel he is out of his elder brothers shadow, I think the band name now provides an even more pertinent reminder to all bands. You don’t have to start big to become well respected..

Having had a successful run with festival appearances across Europe and North America, there is a chance to catch them in a different setting inCarnaby Street in early September, where they appear at a GAP store which will only exist for 19 days and 69 hours to celebrate 40 years of GAP, details here.

If anyone grabs a video of Ben’s Brother at the GAP event, I would be glad to post it on the indie bands blog, let me know.
