The band of the month reflects both activity on the site over the month and votes cast by readers of the blog over a 7 day vote.

Vaqueros Paganos have begun working on their second album, though as yet do not have a release date for the work, which will follow up from the May release of El Libro Negro.

While the band are hoping to hit a larger audience, they are determined that actually playing music they love, which they control is far more important than achieving a high profile commercial success.

The members of the band, enjoy each others company and have similar influences, though far from live in each others pockets, which frees them as individuals to bring their own creativity and style to the music they create, whilst free to explore their own solo projects.

Vaqueros Paganos create a mix of electronic, psychedelic and rock music, which is always refreshing and due to its breadth appeals to a wide audience. For a full review, see the indie bands blog article on Vaqueros Paganos

negro fluo

The music is instantly accessible, Jorge Niklison is far more introspective.

Negro Fluo comprises of only Jorge, yet his loop backs are not just a minutes work.

I managed a short exchange with Jorge, for which I am grateful. As I said on the first entry, Indie Bands blog is about exploring music which resonates and adds to the weave of human experience. With no doubt Negro Fluo hits the mark.

I find the music haunting, to Jorge, from Buenos Aires, his music explores landscapes and situations he has either been in or wants to explore. As he composes and produces, he takes the time to realise his vision. He works hard to produce the sound he wants to express, but doesn’t come over as over-dubbed.

Once again I am pleased to be able to offer a download of the second album. The first album ‘Arenero’ is no longer available, other than the first track on the eponymous Negro Fluo, ‘Hidden clouds’ Negro Fluo. (this is a zip file so will take a moment to download and unzip)

Even the name ‘Negro Fluo’, has no genuine English translation, nor any Spanish construction which makes sense. The unattainable colour, ‘flourescent black’ expresses the enigma which is Jorge. I recall the same intensity and dedication from Ian Curtis with Joy Division.

After the music, the thing I like best about the band, which translates as Pagan Cowboys and conjures up exactly the right ethos for this Argentinian Band.

Having started out in Buenos Aires as a duet comprising Clara V. (Vocals and guitar) and Diego Pagani (vocals and guitar), they teamed up with Coco (Bass), Lean Perry (Keyboards) and Martin Bocking (Drums) at the start of 2008 and the ‘Pagan Cowboys’ set about rounding up the influences as diverse as ’90′s grunge, 50′s ballads and psychedelia; combining this with lyrics about the darker side of love.

Vaqueros Paganos managed to get their first gig on the elusive 29th February 2008 and have since played in Argentina and Uruguay.
Their first album ‘El Libro Negro‘ was released just this year and the artwork is worth time on its own. The album shows clearly their breadth of influence, through the evocative ‘El Pastor’ and the moody ‘La Victima’.

In addition to the album of their own material, they released the surreal Monocovers, which was recorded in an hour using one microphone and includes the diverse range of cover from Frank and Nancy Sinatra, The Poppy Family and Nancy in Chains. (There is a stability issue on this code, but hey, these are indie bands, don’t shoot me, so if you get a white stripe below, here is the link to Monocovers

In addition to playing more gigs, plans include Monocovers II, which as Clara V. suggested should be called Stereocovers along with a follow up album to ‘El Libro Negro’.

It is always a pleasure to write about bands on the indie bands blog, who are out there using the current tools of the trade to develop a profile and a following and I wish Vaqueros Paganos every success.
