Clues from Montreal are a significant marker in the Canadian indie music scene. Their exploratory music will resonate with music fans who appreciate creativity. Even attempting to designate the band is fraught with difficulty. In mid 2007 Alden Penner and Brendan Reed got together as an experimental band and played some low profile gigs, which led them to expand the line-up to include Ben Borden, Lisa Gamble, and Nick Scribner as the core of the band. To try and identify individual instruments would take more than a few lines, but to highlight a few: a Commodore 64, pianette, horns. Their first eponymous album which came out in May 2009 in addition to the core band members additionally credits: Thierry Amar, Noah Cannon, Nathan Gage, Ben Howden and Louisa Sage.

Clues - Credit Yannick Grandmont

This is far away from a crackpot conceptual band making noise for the sake of it. Clues create music which leads the listener in to a voyage of discovery, only requiring an open mind to let the music do the work while the listener is carried off to new places. Each track is uniquely positioned, as the instruments and vocals weave their path to a natural conclusion. I often receive releases from experimental bands, who try just too hard to impress. Clues take the use of multiple instruments and styles and keep control of their output, with great use of percussion and bass to keep the music moving forwards . Exactly the type of band who fit perfectly on the indie bands blog. ‘Perfect fit’ is on my list of ‘I must play this again (and again).’

While the music may not be my home ground, the creativity and experimentation hits a home run. Tour info coming up soon on the indie bands blog

Jointpop from Trinidad and Tobago have been around since 1996, producing music with a wide range of influences, from the ’60s to the ’80s. Gary Hector (Guitar/Vocal), Damon Homer (Guitar) Dion Camacho (Drums) Phil Hill (Keyboards) and Jerome Girdharrie (Bass) have combined to make a great sounding band.

Jointpop

Throughout their wide repertoire, I find myself happily tapping away to the sound pouring in to my ears, with a smile on my face. Just the kind of up-lifting rock the world needs to find more time to enjoy. Maintaining an extensive touring calendar, on an email exchange Gary indicated that Jointpop are hoping to play in the UK during 2010. Well worth taking time to get out the see the band when they arrive near to you.

Jointpop sit outside the mainstream of music, for no discernible reason and it would come as no surprise at all to see them scoring some well deserved success, as the winds of fashion change.

I normally listen to the music as I am writing an article and on this occasion I have been so distracted by the music, which I have enjoyed immensely, I have now been writing this short article for well over an hour, as I am transported back to my days as a ’70s Punk Rocker on to some superb reggae sounds, with a wide range of styles in between.
