Jon and Lynn

The Watercolor Café June 2^nd – that’s this coming Wednesday, 7:30 PM. They’re on the main drag in Larchmont, which is a nice town, and the food is excellent. They suggest reservations at (914) 834-2213.

The East Side, to the Orchard House Café at 58^th and 1^st Ave, on June 11- a Friday – at 8 PM. The “suggested contribution” there is $10, and they suggest reservations as well: 212-371-1170.

Then, back to Larchmont on Sunday June 27^th for a brunch-hour performance at Anna Maria’s Restaurant. Try the Polenta with Sausage or the Mussels in white wine and garlic… awesome! (914) 833-0555

Jon and lynn

With a running time of just over 50 minutes, Jon and Lynn create a triumphant release with their minimalist instrumentation and soaring vocal.

Opening with Never My Love which sets the scene for the LP. Jon Burr brings out some very strong sounds from the Bass, testing the extremities of each end of the scale, while Lynn Stein adds a sultry and smokey vocal.

Can’t Take my Eyes off of you is a superb composition and a highly challenging piece to tackle, yet the duo manage to create the sway and rhythm at the heart of the song. Lynn is able to showcase her vocal and takes complete control of the track, as Jon frames her voice with a sympathetic pitch.

Until similarly captures the swing effectively, which really shouldn’t be possible with just a bass to support the voice. Jon manages to pack in an unbelievable number of heavy notes to the track, (my fingers have numbed in sympathy), while Lynn’s voice seems to float away on a harp, keeping a great tempo to the piece.

On How Can I Be Sure, Jon begins the piece with a bow, which sets a completely new atmosphere to the piece, before picking the strings again as the song begins to gain tempo, with Jon reverting back to bow for the final chords.

Burr’s own composition Last Road To Home, sees the duo in superb syncopation, with some great connection between the two of them.

Folks on the Hill, finds Lynn putting on a virtuoso performance as the duo manage to bring real sentiment and soul to the track.

Downtown, what can I say apart from, how does Jon manage to handle the bass as fast as he does? Superb musicianship and vocal see the duo really soar in to a fine space.

The penultimate track The Best Thing for You, finds the duo in a playful mood and we even find an extended bass solo. A great, fun and tight track.

The final track When I talk to you, another Jon Burr composition, once again finds Lynn Stein giving room for her voice to soar and dive, like a bird swooping over a field.

Jon and Lynn is a well crafted release, which enables the duo to showcase their breadth of musical influence and it is very easy to feel that there must have been a full orchestra involved somewhere along the line.

The duo work well as the pitch of Lynn’s vocal is cleverly counter-balanced by the weight of the bass, generating an LP which has some real legs to it and is far more than a concept release.

This track shows a more playful Jon and Lynn as they create a lilting version of The Folks Who Live on the Hill. Far more demanding of Lynns vocal ability than some of the recent tracks they have done, Jon and Lynn once again demonstrate their ability to take on a new challenge and create something with real depth.

It will be interesting to see what the New Year brings for the duo and I hope they can find some studio time to get more of their own original compositions laid down.

Downtown- Jon and Lynn

I think this is perhaps one of their best arrangements, as the Bass is played to the extremity of its range with some fantastic slap and picking from Jon. I just hope he had plenty of plasters around.

This arrangement of Downtown has a real uplifting sound to it and I found myself smiling in enjoyment as the duo reached another level in their short time playing together.

It is difficult to believe this arrangement is just a bass and vocal, as the continual hopping beat from the bass should need more than one player. Lynns vocals are pitched really well to the mood of the track.

In my opinion, this is the best track they have released so far and this style suits perfectly for the duo. I am pretty sure Jon must nurse bruised fingers, but they pull this one right out of the bag.

The only thing missing are some new images of Jon and Lynn, so if anyone else can join me in my request for new images,  please either comment below or contact them directly.

Cry me a river – Jon and Lynn

I found myself drifting into a smoke filled cellar bar as I listened to this, a great rendition and as Jon and Lynn have continued to work together, so their interplay has become stronger.

The band of the month is based on activity on the site over the month and by votes cast by readers of the blog over 7 days. With the top twenty spots comprising music from eleven different countries, there is no great surprise that the music is as diverse as the geography.

Lynn Stein and Jon Burr got together over the summer and decided to try out a concept that is a little different using just a bass and vocals and have created something of a phenomenon. Their ever growing fanbase appreciate the way in which Jon and Lynn have been able to improvise comlicated pieces to develop what is becoming a distinctive sound, with the clarity of Lynns voice and the accomplished bass picking by Jon. Having covered a few pieces, the indie bands blog was given an early listening to some of their original compositions, which went down particularly well with a large section of readers of the blog.

On each occasion that it seems the duo are about to miss an instrument as Lynn reaches a pause, Jon responds with a bass line which fills in the gap and the Last Road to Home continues to make sense. This is a track on which I found myself finding more intricacy the more I listened, bearing in mind this is a duo, that is some mean feat.

Kudos to Jon and Lynn for taking on what they must have known was a complex piece and they have made it work really well. It is great to hear, as the duo have developed Lynn taking a far more leading role, which works superbly, particularly in this release.

I particularly like the fact they have opened themselves up to the potential  that more instrumentation could have opened up another avenue, but have had the confidence to answer this with an inspired bass response.

This is a duo who should be supported and it wont be long before they have the confidence to put their music up for sale. Grab it while you can.
