There is no mistaking the distinctive sound of Gaoler’s Daughter and St. Peter refreshes the mind as to why they are a band who should be gaining far more exposure.

The unmistakeable voice of John Sterry, reverberates from the speakers, as the highly effective guitar bounces playfully against well tempered percussion. St. Peter finds the band in a perhaps a more commercial frame of mind, as dance beats pulsate my darkened room. I think this adds nicely to the repertoire and is a neat little release which will remind the fans and those searching for emerging bands exactly what makes Gaoler’s Daughter a band worth getting to know. For some reason that reminds me, I must find out if John is still traipsing up from Brighton…

Gaoler's Daughter - The Only Way To Travel

Opening with picked guitar supporting the distinctive voice of John Sterry, quietly the drums are picked up and heard tapping in the back-ground as the band gradually pick up the pace and volume, until the superb hopping beat takes us on the flight that is Jumbo Jet.

From Russia With Love is a reflection of the death of Alexander Litvinenko. With a superb piece of lyrical writing Gaoler’s Daughter succeed in telling the story from a biographical perspective. Some great guitar work brings the whole atmosphere of the song together.

Clown and Out Blues reminds me of Ian Dury, with a great reggae influence. The off-beat construction, is a sound I always enjoy, relying on strong bass playing.

Sister on the Stairs is the fastest piece, combining rock with the high guitar pick, which is the trademark of the band. On this track, the drums come to prominence, as the sounds drift towards African Kwala beat.

In a fairly lengthy conversation with Ben (and thanks for taking the time out Ben, much appreciated) he pointed out that many people were unfamiliar with the derivative spelling of jail, which resulted in the band either being mispronounced, or mispelt. So if you see posters for a band called Jailer’s Daughter, or hear someone talking about Goal-ers Daughter, they may well be talking about this great band from South London.

Freeing the band members from closed thinking, creating music with which they all feel comfortable is something that the members of the band do successfully. Gaoler’s Daughter are keeping themselves busy, with an EP coming out on the 1st December, The only way to travel, (I will get a review done on this later in the week) and a desire to keep out on the road and their second EP, currently project named ‘Alchemy‘ under way.

It is great to be able to write about a band which has the confidence to set out from the start with the clear remit of ‘let’s do what we enjoy, regardless of genre’. It is a difficult feat, as the stylistic changes can often lead to a band sounding either unformed, or an alienated fan-base. Neither is the case with Gaoler’s Daughter, as the distinctive voice of John makes for an unmistakable sound. The musical capabilities of the band are undisguised, as they handle with ease a mix of genres. The only way to travel, sees the band in reflective mood, ‘Alchemy‘ will be defined by a harder edge to the output.
