Max and The Wild Things
Max and the Wild Things from Nashville in the USA is a folk-a-Billy alternative folk band made up of Aidan Traynor (Lead Vocals / Electric Guitar / Banjo), Cole Traynor (Bass), Andy Wilmoth (Drums), Willie Guy Arnot (Tenor Ukulele / Acoustic Guitar), Jessica French (Vocals) and Kat Smo (Vocals)
There must be something about this particular Monday as for the second time in succession I find myself in the heart of Americana – I still don’t feel the need for a dark fizzy sugar or a lump of fat and gristle between slabs of sweetened dough fortunately. Though I do find myself wanting to dig in to a second helping of Max and The Wild Things.
Rarely do I look at any logo and think – this sums up the band in a nutshell – it just lets you know in an instant where they sit.
I hit play and had to take a few turns around the room before aiming back for the keyboard, this demands the listener is up and about as the sextet tear up the concrete foundations and turn the immediate space in to a party mode as they deliver a prismatic and quizzical perspective of the world around. The view is wrapped inside a sound that has toes tapping and faces wreathed in smiles as they deliver what can only be described as folk-a-billy for the enjoyment of the audience.
Underneath the fun there lie some serious musicians and the music contains a range of interesting chords and key changes along with superbly played instruments, even the off-centre vocal serves as a focal point, perhaps there is an analogy in them-thar flat notes.
