House of Ghosts
House of Ghosts are from Spokane in the USA, a five piece made up of Damian Putney, Dan McCready, Nick Dotson, Wes Davidson and Jeff Crotty, describing their music as Ghost Wave, a concept that suits well.
It is the persistent bass which draws me to House of Ghosts, with an ethereal sounding vocal, the band mix guitars and keys to generate an output in which the listener is drawn into a slightly eerie sounding space. By utilising the heavy bass and drum, they have the distinct feeling of film atmospherics.
House of Ghosts retain a wide focus on the overall drama surrounding a piece, ensuring that each instrument forms part of an orchestration, rather than the more usual structure of tight almost introspective focussing and in this instance the musical capability of the writers and players succeeds admirably.
I am becoming ever keener on this style of music as I have been exposed to an ever growing number of bands who have this feel about them and those that work, are superb at creating a real sense of both commentary and involvement. What is particularly interesting is the way this style is spreading globally, with bands from Europe, North and South America, finding a common space to explore.
With a self released eponymous LP for sale, it will be interesting to see how House of Ghosts develop both musically and artistically.
