Archy and Mehitabel

Archy and Mehitabel, from New York in the USA are an acoustic duo, Alexander Horwitz (piano, harpsichord, production) and Lee Waters (voice, lyrics).  Alexander is a classically trained pianist and composer, while Lee is a folk singer song-writer, who has gained influences from his time in Russia.

Much of  the work produced by Archy and Mehitabel sees the duo using just piano and vocal. The structured compositions and clarity of vocal from Lee enable the duo to write stark pieces which rely totally on the strength of performance, which they pull of with great credit. The baroque style compositions, which are updated to a modern formula, are a great demonstration of compelling indie composition.

while I didn’t ask the guys about the source of the name, i am pretty sure the don marquis classic was at the forefront of their mind, as the angst of the compositions runs parallel to the struggles faced by archy, the out-put itself reflecting the enthusiasm for life displayed by mehitabel.

With a new charity supporting single just released, Virginia, in aid of The Matthew Shepard Foundation, a rural nonprofit that works with children in schools as well as lobbying in Washington DC to prevent violence against members of the GLBT community. It is good to be able to report on a small indie outfit who in their own way without the fuss of a high budget global release are aiming to make a difference, whilst creating music they believe in.
