The Dark Lights – Stop Existing, Start Living – EP review
The Dark Lights who I first reviewed in March 2012 have a new four track EP – Stop Existing, Start Living set for release on the 1st July 2013.
A change in line-up since I first introduced the band, but the music remains as recognizable. Opening with Clear The Air slighter more rock derived than previously the band retains the idiosyncratic style which has the darker edges driven forward by the electronics.
Next up is Sticks and Stones which takes the audience to a Scandinavian derivative and a higher tonality that jostles the listener with a xypholonic base texture which swims cunningly around the track creating a sense of the mysterious.
Game Of Two Hearts is a more subtle piece which engages the brain to work with the lyrical content and tempered instrumental and is my pick of the release as this to me, finds The Dark Lights playing to their creative strengths.
The concluding track Ghosts follows this creative streak with the darker mood flowing through the track as the music slows and gathers pace throughout the piece as they travel through a coherent and contextual mix of musical styles.
