SALT III is a collective of musicians based in Budapest – Toof (Russian),  Imre Poniklo (Hungarian), Zoli Kovary and Michael Zwecker (American) who aptly came up with the name SALT III as a play on the SALT I and II agreements. All with their own bands – this is perhaps a project set to flare and fade like a firework – of the moment and for the moment. You may recall Toof from a review of Kollaps.

The four track EP opens with Little Green Soldier and the chorus of voices echoing from one to each other adds considerably to the depth of the guitar which has the hallmark of floating guitar signatures and a resonating percussion / bass combination to which the odd dash of keys are added to the atmospherics.

Don’t Leave Now has a distinct feel of Oliver’s Army, before taking a turn for the darker vestiges of rock for the current age.

Disabella has a completely different derivation, whilst there are some drops of Brit-pop the track hints of calamities waiting therein. The moods and atmosphere that this collective of musicians is able to deliver through the recordings is a sheer delight and only saddens that this is possibly just a one off collaboration.

Concluding with Only Work When It Hurts and my pick of the the SALT III EP. Fast, tight new wave slugs out of the speakers fists flying and the listener is harried into the corner to enjoy a solid two and a bit minutes of exemplary agit rock and I find myself on natural territory.

Whether this is the one and only iteration of SALT III – or there is more to follow, my thoughts – set a note for the 8th April and grab the EP when it becomes available. My thanks to Michael for sending through the release.
