Boxed Wine – EP review – Cheap, Fun
It was back in August 2012 that I introduced the US indie band Boxed Wine and they have now released their EP – Cheap, Fun which came out on the 22nd January 2013.
Opening with Bones - an indie rock number with an upped tempo as the instantly recognizable enhanced percussion and bass rattles the speakers, whilst the lyrics explore the perplexities of relationships. A sharply delivered wake-up call for the ears.
Boomerang is a more indie pop centred sound which is delivered by paring back the numbers of notes and spacing them more widely, but the sound retains that over-all cloak of lower register connectivity that I particularly enjoy in the out-put of Boxed Wine.
Concluding with the danceable Dayglow (Why Can’t We Stay). Which flutters around the room vocally accompanied by a driving tempo that catches the listener un-awares, as musically, it is much lighter than the precious tracks.
As I mentioned in my last review Boxed Wine is a band which would be comfortably at home in the UK and Cheap, Fun is no exception.
The release is a decent showcase of the bands breadth of styles and serves as a template for their debut LP which is in the blocks. I look forward to getting hold of the LP and reviewing it. In the interim Cheap, Fun EP – Single – Boxed Wine is available on itunes*
