Spectrals
Spectrals is the vehicle Louis Jones from Heckmondwike in England, uses as his means of spreading his music to a wider audience. There is a noticeable proliferation of solo artists from this region of England, each with very intense and personal messages to eviscerate and examine. After a first release in 2009, Spectrals have gained a broad international audience.
There is an immediate familiarity with the music, which is a rooted in the sounds of the new wave influences of Stiff Records, which Spectrals have brought forward 30 years and infused with soul, creating some heartfelt out-put.
There is a depth of lyrical content which belies the jaunty sounds, reminding me somewhat of Reader’s Wives from Dublin. The musical content forms a well shaped back-drop to the real energy happening with the vocal and as such Spectrals deserve the time to listen to the vocal, while riding the wave of the music which in skips along to a smart double time beat, almost something to dance a foxtrot.
This combination of earthy grittiness and engaging fun musical content is no easy feat and Spectrals is a proven structure. I am led to believe that when Louis Jones set up his MySpace Page he anticipated he would only share this with friends, it is of no surprise that this developed in to a world wide engagement, deservedly so.
