Fire At Night

Thrumming bass rattles out of the speakers like a ripple of corrugated steel wending its way across the room and the listener stands transfixed with the spectral about to descend. There is a delightful delay that sits within the material, allowing the brain to engage prior to the notes arriving which adds to the anticipation and Fire At Night do not disappoint when the sounds finally float across to the cochlea.

The sybaritic vocal interweaves like a gossamer thread to the instrumentation, hidden but highly relevant. This is a smart group of musicians who aim to tell their story in the way they wish and give it the space you will find it lays easily on the ears and a band worth more than a cursory glance. It is of little surprise they have wrested through so many line-ups.

I couldn’t leave here, for those who know the geography of the UK, you were just waiting for my reaction to Farnborough – yes Fire At Night are from the other one – the one in Hampshire, not the one that matters – in the Borough of Bromley, which sort of led me back to The Change Of Horses a venue which was regularly frequented, much to the dismay of the local residents and had many nights I have enjoyed, sadly now reeling in mediocrity.

Enough of recollections – I will get round to writing about night in the The Change of Horses another day, for now – Fire At Night – a different county, a different century and equally expressive of currency.
