Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards is a band from London in England. Originally emerging as a solo project from the embers of a previous band, Dan Michaelson plays along-side both regular instrumentalists and guest musicians.

There is a certain inevitability, that with a baritone the sound is going to catch my attention, even if it has taken me since September 2010 to get to put hand to keyboard.
The material has a dark elemental romanticism, which draws the head closer to the speakers, until head and music are fused in a melting pot of emotional angst and by then it is too late to withdraw. Best to sit with the mood and let the out-put wash through the brain.
There are vocalists who so over-power the instrumentation it is easy to ignore what is happening in the background, Dan Michaelson sits in that select group. Yet to ignore what is happening in this instance is a mistake, as doing so misses a good chunk of the whole experience. Delightfully crafted pieces of porous rock emerge through the musical compositions, akin to fractals.
It may have taken me over eighteen months to get here, but, during that time there have been additional releases and like a good wine, the ageing process has served well.
