Calling All Astronauts

Is this synthed-up rock or rocked-up synthesiser? Either way Calling All Astronauts make a welcome appearance into my ears on hitting play as passion purple music billows across the room. There is a retro ’80s romanticism which has been reinvigorated for the 10′s and the free flowing sounds that pack layers of texture are a delight in which to wallow.

The slightly gothic undertones which blend with synth and guitar are urged forward by an omnipresent under-current of rolling percussion and layering the whole piece is a growling vocal as Calling All Astronauts work both the good time dance nerves and the more intellectual part of the brain with a lyric that casts a wary eye on social mores.

To my head, what more could I ask for from music – Velvety S&M undertones, decent bass levels, danceability and a sense of Social awareness.  Calling All Astronauts demonstrate the viability of computing power in music when in the hands of people with creativity and a sense of adventure.

Having been around since 2011, I would expect the trio to pick up a pace this year, particularly given the release of their debut LP - Post Modern Conspiracy.
