Larry Gus is Panagiotis Melidis, originally from Veria in Greece now based in Milan Italy. The music is electronics led with a mix of influences supporting a mellow sound-track.

Larry Gus

Larry Gus is a pun based on the Larynx, with the Greek word for Larynx being larigas. I liked that immediately, before I heard the music – speaking of which.

Brevity I think is the watchword here, with the experimental and highly looped material, not to mentioned mixed at different speeds and in reverse, Larry Gus is unafraid to push the edges of playability. He superbly combines a meld of influences, from the Urban Ghettos of the USA to the wide open spaces of North Africa and not forgetting to hop around the Mediterranean including Greece. That sounds as though it may be a drop too much spice in the mixture, not at all, as I mentioned brevity is the key, which enables a scintillating glimpse of a snapshot world tour, not the lengthy hours and hours looking at photographs of a friends holiday or New born Baby snaps, while desperately looking for an excuse to leave.

As with all experimental artists, the material can at times be challenging, but the humour and creative intelligence shines like a beacon.

Death in Plains is Enrico Boccioletti, from Pesaro in Italy, who brings to the world the sounds of electronics.

Death in Plains

Death in Plains, is just what needed after a hectic morning, the languorous beats, akin to a synchrocyclotron, with the laid back sound-waves generating an ever more effective cocoon in which to relax. Effortlessly, the days concerns are shrugged off the shoulders, the bounced impulses ease in to the ears.

Subtle fuzz cloaks the music, with the vocal floating gently above the sound-track. It would be easy to drift away for some considerable time, as the music performs its magic. Despite the under-stated out-put, Enrico packs a powerful range of notes in the construction of the music, which give this a well structured direction. It’s very lassitude is its power.

He is also perfectly capable of upping the tempo and delivering a far more energetic scaffold on which to weave the music.

Oh NO ITs POk from Italy are a three piece euro-synth band comprising Jimmy POk (vocals, guitar and sequencer), Billy POk (synth and vocoder) and Danny POk (drums and percussions).

Oh No Its Pok

Having just released their 6 track EP Messicos, they are developing a presence both in Italy and the North London club circuit.

The Post Punk electro scene as readers of the site will know, made me smile hugely, and Oh NO ITs POk even have a band name based on a pastiche on Devo. If you can sit through this band without raising a shoulder at the very least, you are reading the wrong web-site.

This is fun, good feeling and ‘I want to be there’, rolled in to bursts of creative energy. Electro-synth bands far too often fail, as they attempt to out-compete Kraftwerk, Oh NO ITs POk, take a new strand and I can feel the essential un-bent string clarity of post punk, blended with speed, with the essential vocoder and sequencer.

The duo have been able to easily bounce of each other, creating some interesting sounds which have a sense of sinister about them. It is the way that the vocal seems to exposed, being framed by a strong, disturbing instrumentation, which marks this out as a really interesting unit.

The incessant rumble of bass, draws my ears to the music as the output paints images of being lost in a vast industrial wasteland. The plea for space by the vocal in shrouded by the sheer drama of the music.

This is great music to listen to at any moment when life all seems to be too disjointed, while the mood would on the surface only seem to exacerbate that feeling of being overpowered, there is a sense that the lost voice, is perhaps not so alone, as it manages to emerge from the vastness of the space.

Vermillion Sands from Italy are a four piece band comprising Anna (guitar & vocals), Nene (bass), Ciao (drums) Kran (fuzz and rhythm guitar). Formed by two bands merging in to one a couple of years ago, their out-put is dramatically understated.

Bopping round the room, is perhaps not the best way to write an article, but their blend of rockabilly and fairground attention grabbing output just demands movement. The drum beat hits my cerebral cortex and just demands a smile.

Superb fuzz back guitar is overlayed with distinctive vocal by Anna, as Vermillion Sands waft me back to sea-side trips. The high voltage output finds me drifting across a range of genres, The Kinks come leaping out, alongside The Stray Cats, brought bang up to date.

The real strength of the band is their ability to play music with the precision and entertainment it generates. Laid-back rockabilly, I think this should become a genre I write about more often.

Armstrong? from Turin in Italy are a trio who first got together in 2005, use a wide range of instrumentation to produce their distinctive dream wave music. Rob (electric and acoustic guitars, piano and electronics) Stefano (bass, synth and loops) and Marco (drums and electronics) have recently released the album Collateral.

Armstrong?

While the musical construction is complex, with loop back and layered guitars, they have retained a directness to the music as the layers create a wave that washes over the listener. With soft lyric and guitar effects, the driving bass and guitar maintain a momentum, which superbly frame the tracks.

The Weezy breath of ghosts by Armstrong?

Armstrong? have managed target their sound with precision, as the multiple layers resonate comfortably, yet with a complexity of construction to retain interest in the output. This is not a particularly easy feat as many bands of this genre manage to create a bland wallpaper texture. Armstrong? rise to the challenge and generate a sound which demands attention.

Ofeliadorme from Bologna in Italy, were formed in 2007, when Francesca Bono (Vocals, guitar and Keyboard) got together with Gianluca Modica (Bass, guitar and backing vocal), soon joined by Tato Izzie (Guitar and bass) and Michele Postpischl (Drums and keyboard). Their experimental music is created as members take on different instruments through their atmospheric musical output.

Many bands try to create an atmospheric moods to their music, but few manage to capture this as effectively as Ofeliadorme. The haunting voice of Francesca instantly transports the music to somewhere other-worldly. The music floats between acoustic laden melodies, to louder darker pieces, with superb percussion provided by Michele. The band fit together superbly as they swap instruments and speed, yet retain a menacing brooding presence, that lets the mind wander while simultaneously mesmerised by the lyrical content and creative use of background sound effects, together with the multiple layers of guitar.

Currently tour dates across Italy, with two events in the UK:

16 Jan-Materia Off-Parma(IT)
